The Mazda CX-5 isn't the newest, highest-tech, most fuel efficient, or most practical compact SUV—but it's definitely the sportiest. Its shortcomings are few, and it remains one of the top-rated vehicles in our compact SUV rankings. For 2021 the CX-5 has been updated with a larger infotainment screen, a new trim level, and a very slight price increase. What are the differences between the 2021 CX-5 trim levels, and which is best? Let's get into Mazda CX-5 Sport Pros and ConsSport is a fitting name for the base trim, as it enjoys the same sporty chassis setup as its higher-end counterparts. It's powered by a I-4 that turns the front wheels, with all-wheel drive optionally available. This engine doesn't make the CX-5 particularly efficient, scoring 25/31 mpg city/highway with FWD and 24/30 mpg with it rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels and has LED headlights. Only black and light blue are included as exterior paint colors; metallic white and red are available at extra cost. Inside, the climate control and cloth-upholstered seats are manually adjustable. Two front-row USB ports, a gauge cluster display, and a four-speaker audio system are standard. The second-row seats recline and have fold-down release handles in the cargo in Sport trim, the CX-5's features indicate Mazda's premium approach. The body-color side mirrors have built-in turn signals, and dual chrome-finished exhaust tips look sporty. Inside, the infotainment display is hard to miss, while the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob feel nicer than the plastic parts found in some competitors. Like all CX-5 trims, driver assist and active safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic emergency braking are included. These help the CX-5 earn top safety ratings from the IIHS and its solid dynamic attributes and driver assist tech, the roughly $26,500 CX-5 Sport appeals for an entry-level model. We wouldn't be disappointed to choose it, but it's pretty Mazda CX-5 Touring Pros and ConsThe Touring trim adds features that help the CX-5 feel less stripped out. These include hands-free keyless entry, illuminated sun visor mirrors, a six-speaker audio system, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Up front, the driver's seat gets power adjustability, and both seats gain three-level heating. The second row is upgraded with air vents, a folding center armrest with cupholders, and tinted side windows. All seats are upholstered in leatherette with faux suede accents. Metallic silver and dark blue are added to the standard paint choices, and dark gray becomes available at extra approximately $28,000, the 2021 CX-5 Touring trim adds features that are nice to have but nothing that's absolutely Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition Pros and ConsMazda might like you to think the 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition is some sort of lightweight or extra-sporty model, but it's mechanically identical to any other trim in the lineup. No carbon fiber here—that "Carbon" bit supposedly relates to the common color of the element black, like coal. Indeed, the Carbon Edition's grille, side mirror caps, and 19-inch wheels are finished in black. It's coated exclusively in Polymetal Gray metallic paint, which isn't offered on any other changes include black or red leather seating upholstery, red stitching on the shift knob and steering wheel, and black trim panels. But the Carbon Edition isn't only about styling—it's equipped with a moonroof, power rear liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 10-speaker Bose audio system. The front passenger seat gains power adjustability, and two USB ports are added to the second at just under $30,000, the CX-5 Carbon Edition adds features that boost its daily usability and enjoyment. If it's in your budget, it's worth a look—so long as you vibe with its blacked-out styling Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo Edition Pros and ConsThis trim is just like the CX-5 Carbon Edition but with—you guessed it—a turbocharged engine. It's the first CX-5 trim that's offered with Mazda's turbocharged I-4, which bumps power to as much as 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium fuel from 186 hp and 186 lb-ft as standard. It's a significant boost that changes the CX-5's driving demeanor—that is, it's much increased performance decreases fuel economy The Carbon Edition Turbo and other CX-5 trims that use this engine are rated at 23/28 mpg with FWD, and 22/27 mpg with for the 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo start at just under $32,000. The trim's increased power and torque give it enthusiast appeal. However, the non-turbo Carbon Edition still has fun handling and the same features. It just isn't as Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Pros and ConsThe premium feel increases in the CX-5 Grand Touring trim. It rolls on bright-finished 19-inch wheels and gains upgraded LED lighting headlights with DRL accents and curve-adaptive functionality, front foglights, and taillights. Inside, the seats are upholstered in black or beige leather. The gauge cluster information display increases to inches in size. It's also the first CX-5 trim that includes paddle shifters, which work pretty well to control the somewhat outdated six-speed automatic. Mazda tosses in a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio on the Grand Touring with these features, the roughly $31,500 CX-5 Grand Touring's price slightly undercuts that of the Carbon Edition Turbo. However, the Grand Touring model is equipped with the naturally aspirated engine— Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve Pros and ConsIn Grand Touring Reserve trim, the CX-5 becomes a more worthy competitor to compact luxury SUVs. It's equipped with the turbocharged engine and AWD. Comfort improves by way of the heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. Technology upgrades include a head-up display and infotainment voice command functionality. Power-folding side mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer add just over $37,000, the CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve trim takes a major price hike over the Grand Touring model. With its powertrain and upscale features, that increase seems justified. It's expensive for a CX-5 but a relative bargain against similarly equipped luxury Mazda CX-5 Signature Pros and ConsAs Mazda plots its move upmarket, its luxurious aims are indicated by the range-topping CX-5 Signature trim. Its 19-inch wheels have a dark silver finish, but for some reason metallic silver paint is unavailable. However its interior is covered in lovely dark brown premium leather upholstery, complemented by genuine layered wood trim. Technology enhancements include a 360-degree parking camera system and road sign recognition capability. The interior overhead lights are replaced with LEDs. Front and rear parking sensors and rear automatic braking help prevent scrapes and scuffs. The turbocharged engine and AWD are standard 2021 CX-5 Signature runs for about $38,500, not a huge lift over the Grand Touring Reserve model. But as nice as that brown leather is, we question if that addition and a few others are worth 2021 Mazda CX-5 Model Is Best? The CX-5 is truly an enthusiast's crossover, and for that reason we think it's best when equipped with the punchy turbocharged engine. As such, we're inclined toward the Carbon Edition Turbo trim—it has that power. What it doesn't have is all the upscale features of higher-end models, but the many inclusions make it a compelling value. The Carbon Edition's catch is that it's only available in Polymetal Gray paint, which won't suit everyone's tastes. Regardless, the CX-5's great looks and dynamics make it a worthy rival to SUVs in its class or even those above.

Vehicle ReviewsWe drove the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo for a few days. Check out the few pros and cons that we found. Published on January 14, 2023 2 min read We spent a little time with the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo and enjoyed every second of it. The CX-50 provides a sporty yet comfortable ride and excels in some ways but not in others. Here are a few pros and cons we found during our time with the 2023 CX-50 Turbo. 1. Con The infotainment system is annoying to use 2023 Mazda CX-50 Mazda We have complained about Mazda’s infotainment systems so much that it’s almost just a cheap shot at this point. However, it’s still worth pointing out, considering Mazda has yet to change the system in a 2023 model like the CX-50. Case in point, the CX-50’s infotainment system consists of a display that sits in the center of the dashboard. It’s not a touchscreen, though. Instead, you have to control it with a knob on the center console. Typically, knob-controlled systems aren’t that bad; however, the Mazda system requires too many clicks to get to specific menus. It’s even cumbersome to change radio stations, which requires taking your eyes off the road for too long. We hope that Mazda will change this system in the next generation of the CX-50. 2. Con The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a little thirsty 2023 Mazda CX-50 Joe Santos, MotorBiscuit A four-cylinder engine powers the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo, but we wish it were a little more fuel-efficient. The EPA rates the CX-50’s fuel economy at 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. In our real-world testing, we averaged around 23 mpg in mixed driving conditions. That’s not terrible, but it could be better. If you do a lot of city driving, just know that the CX-50 could be a little thirsty. 3. Pro The Mazda CX-50 is sized well, even for tall passengers 2023 Mazda CX-50 Mazda The Mazda CX-50 is the brand’s second-largest SUV. It slots between the CX-5 and the CX-9, which means that it’s large and roomy enough to fit tall passengers. There’s plenty of leg and headroom in the first and second rows. We imagine that passengers around 6 feet, 4 inches tall, and shorter should be able to fit just fine. 4. Pro The CX-50 drives well on snowy roads 2023 Mazda CX-50 Joe Santos, MotorBiscuit During our time with the Mazda CX-50, we were able to take it on a few snow-covered roads. We weren’t exactly driving in deep snow; however, the CX-50’s i-Activ AWD system did well on the snowy roads we drove on. From a dead stop, the car’s all-season tires gripped the road quickly, which was partly assisted by the all-wheel drive system. 5. Pro The Mazda CX-50’s turbocharged engine provides plenty of power 2023 Mazda CX-50 Joe Santos, MotorBiscuit The 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo puts out 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, which is the same engine that’s used across the product lineup. In the CX-50, the engine works really well, as it’s able to pull the little SUV up inclines and onto the freeway with ease. Anyone looking to get into a Mazda CX-50 should consider the extra power over the base engine – especially if they live in higher elevations. The pros and cons of driving the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo The 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo is an excellent choice for anyone in need of a small SUV. The pros of driving it outweigh the cons by a large margin. If you don’t mind the infotainment system and the gas mileage, the CX-50 Turbo could be for you.
Notonly does Mazda CX-5 seat five people comfortably, it has carrying all kinds of cargo covered. The 40/20/40 split fold-down rear seatback gives you true flexibility when it comes to your cargo space. And with the ability to fold the seats completely flat, you can enjoy a massive 1,340L of cargo room. *Overseas model shown.

Why would you buy a CX-50 over a CX-5, or vice-versa? We examine pros and cons on tiny zero changes everything with Mazda SUVs. The new-for-2023 CX-50 may seem like nothing more than a CX-5 with an off-road-ready look, but there's more to it than that. These SUVs clearly share a family look, but spend as much time as we have with each Mazda, and you start to understand their differences, as well as the pros and cons of each. So if you're curious why you'd get a CX-50 instead of a CX-5 or vice-versa, read on and check out photos you won't find anywhere Lower, and WiderWe normally associate "longer, lower, and wider" as attributes of sleek sports cars, not SUVs trying to project an outdoorsy appeal. Even so, that's how the new 2023 Mazda CX-50 distinguishes itself from the CX-5. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either SUV in terms of design; Mazda has been building attractive vehicles for years. When you walk around both, you'll notice the CX-50 appears to have a longer hood, and it also boasts a few chunkier styling elements like the exaggerated fender flares in a contrasting color, fake vents in the rear to emphasize its width, and black trim around the grille. 2023 Mazda CX-50 2022 Mazda CX-5 Length in. in. Width in. in. Height in. in. Wheelbase in. in. Advantage The less fussy Mazda CX-5 for us, but design preference is subjective. See them both in person and decide for They DriveJust because these SUVs are similarly sized and priced doesn't mean they're identical to drive. The two SUVs share engines and a promise to be among the sportier players in their competitive set, but they ride on different platforms. Although each boasts communicative steering, the CX-5's feels heavier—not something most of us want every time we turn the 187-hp engine powers the standard version of both Mazda SUVs while a 227-hp turbocharged model is offered, too—and if you fill it with 93-octane fuel, horsepower jumps to 256. MotorTrend-tested 0-60-mph times for both turbocharged SUVs have disappointed at the track; a 2022 CX-5 reached the benchmark speed in seconds, and the 2023 CX-50 hit it in seconds. Yes, this is quicker than the base-engine models can achieve, but we'd still like more oomph for the extra-cost variants. At least they sound good at wide-open said that, the CX-5 and CX-50 largely deliver on being more fun to drive than the average Advantage Mazda CX-50PricingIf you're looking for a reason to get one over the other, pricing won't be it. As this is written, the 2023 Mazda CX-50's pricing is remarkably close to that of the 2022 CX-5. Like Subaru, Mazda now includes AWD as standard on every SUV. The 2023 CX-50 S base trim model carries an MSRP of $28,025. The 2022 CX-5 S is only $550 cheaper, and that gap may close for the 2023 model the CX-50, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be wirelessly activated, but it's cord-only on the CX-5. After thousands of miles using the phone-mirroring feature on the large and standard screen, we've come to really appreciate the wireless if you want a power liftgate? In that case, the price difference shrinks to 10 bucks when comparing the 2023 CX-50 to the 2022 CX-5. Perhaps because the CX-5 has been around longer, you get more features with that S Preferred trim besides a power liftgate. The 2022 CX-5 also adds leather seats and a power moonroof. The 2023 CX-50 uses Mazda's first panoramic dual-panel moonroof, but that gets added on the next trim up, the S Preferred Plus. If you're looking for the turbocharged models, the 2023 CX-50 starts at $37,625 and the 2022 CX-5 costs $350 Tie. Keep in mind that regional variations of supply and demand may change the prices near and Passenger SpaceMazdas aren't known for being the most capacious cars around, and these SUVs don't change that. The CX-5 offers up to cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which is a tad lower than the CX-50's cubic feet. If you're hauling more than the cargo area can handle, the CX-50 can tow up to 3,500 pounds with the turbocharged engine—1,500 pounds more than the CX-5 has more passenger space inside, but neither feels cramped. Both SUVs have reasonably spacious rear seats that won't give the Honda CR-V a run for its money; thanks to those wide-opening rear doors, though, entry and exit are easier. We'd also note that the CX-5 feels like it has a slightly more commanding view of the road Honda CR-V and Subaru OutbackLuxury-Like Appeal? Yes and NoMazda's premium aspirations come through loud and clear in the most loaded trims of the CX-5 and CX-50. One of our favorite features in the CX-5 is the cushy leather-like legrests on either side of the center console. It's an incredibly underrated feature longer-legged folks may use every time they're stopped in CX-50 lacks that detail but does offer a new terracotta brown/orange seat color with black contrasting trim. It's not the traditional saddle brown color we see on some luxury cars, but it still works. On the CX-50 we have for a year, we paired that with a set of four $150 premium black floormats with a silver "CX-50" plate for the front row and contrasting trim to match the rest of the interior. On the CX-5 Turbo Signature, we found that model's Caturra Brown Nappa leather seats to look plenty premium, but they were so dark you might not initially notice they were both SUVs could use an update to justify a $40,000-plus price tag on loaded models is their instrument clusters. Both have a partial digital instrument cluster with limited functionality that pales next to the best designs in the business. However, both SUVs do something better than many other cars and SUVs do at any price—they break up the dashboard design in an almost relaxing way. There's tons of space between the central air vents and the next set of controls in both the CX-5 and CX-50. It's a cleaner Mazda CX-50CX-50 vs. CX-5 Which One Should I Get?We're amazed at how well Mazda has kept the CX-5 relevant after so many years without a full redesign. And it still looks great. We appreciate the CX-50, too, and see subtle ways Mazda learned from the CX-5, especially in the cabin. The HVAC controls are easier to use, and the higher-end models offer more features. The CX-50, however, is an acquired taste. Mazda successfully applied the same design language to a spirit that's more trail-ready than boulevard-cruiser. That's not for everyone, and we'd recommend a closer look at these photos and in person to see how these SUVs come alive in different May Also Like

TheMazda MINAGI (Japanese: マツダ 勢) concept car, unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, was the first Mazda vehicle to combine the company's Kodo design language and Skyactiv technologies. Its design served as a preview of the CX-5. In rapid development from 2009 to 2011 under Hideaki Tanaka and styled under Masashi Nakayama from 2009 to 2010, the CX-5 was first shown at the September
Tips, Tricks & TrendsThe Mazda CX-5 is a reliable SUV overall, but there are some years to avoid if you do not want to incur extra maintenance costs. The 2014 and 2016 CX-5's have the most complaints. Published on May 15, 2021 2 min read The Mazda CX-5 is a popular SUV that is fairly reliable overall. Some years have more issues than others, but Consumer Reports still recommend it. Buyers in the market for a new or used Mazda should know common issues to prepare for the cost of ownership. Which Mazda CX-5 year has the most complaints? A red Mazda CX-5 SUV on display in Belgium Sjoerd van der Wal/Getty Images According to Car Complaints, there are 366 complaints lodged over eight model years. For the 2014 CX-5, there were 96 complaints made. That went down for 2015 11 complaints but went back up to 133 complaints for 2016. For that same year, Consumer Reports gave the reliability a four out of five. The owner satisfaction was three out of five. CR notes five recalls. The Daytime Running Lights failing, the light gate failing, and an issue with the steering system. The other two relate to the fuel filler pipe and a loose bracket on the windshield. 2017 shows only one complaint and 2018 shows three. Overall, that means the CX-5 is improving year over year. One of the biggest complaints in earlier years was about the windshield, which seems to have been remedied by Mazda. Consumer Reports gave the 2017 and 2018 CX-5 a reliability score of five out of five. The overall owner satisfaction was four out of five. The 2018 model has two open recalls for the power train and airbags. For 2017, there is only a recall for the trailer wiring harness. What are the biggest issues? The number one issue noted across the board revolves around the windshield. Some drivers commented that the windshield cracked easily, which is a fairly significant issue. The typical repair cost is noted as $780 and usually requires a windshield replacement. 10 drivers complained about the cracked windshield. The second most common issue is similar that the windshield breaks easily. In order to repair not replace the windshield, it cost around $440. There were a total of 19 complaints about this. Some drivers noted that the windshield cracked out of nowhere, without any previous damage or cracks. Another big issue was related to lights on the SUV. Drivers complained that the daytime running light LEDs went out prematurely. Other complaints noted that various blinkers and running lights went out. There were 41 noted complaints about the DRL failure. The typical repair cost is about $1,130, which is a hefty price to pay. Since drivers need to replace the headlight assembly or headlamps, it is not a cheap fix. That doesn’t mean you should avoid the CX-5 Mazda has the most TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards with five — for the Mazda 3 sedan, Mazda 3 hatchback, Mazda 6, CX-3 and CX-5. The company earns an additional TOP SAFETY PICK for the CX-9. 9/11 IIHS IIHS_autosafety February 13, 2020 The CX-5 is popular for good reason. It is a reasonably priced SUV that comes with many standard safety features. When purchasing a used vehicle, it is a good idea to know about common problems before they happen. Consumer Reports still recommends the 2016 Mazda CX-5. It scored a four out of five for reliability. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety IIHS gave the various crash and rollover tests “good.” The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA rated most crash and rollover tests four and five stars.
